The cry heard across the Internet earlier this week was horror fans bemoaning the (continued) lack of recognition for our beloved genre. Whether or not you think public recognition from normies is important, the Oscars and other awards bodies do have an impact on the visibility, box office and overall acceptance of the genre so it’s hard not to take the lack of acknowledgment of, say, Lupita Nyong’o and Jordan Peele for Us, or Florence Pugh and Ari Aster for Midsommar or Robert Pattinson, Willem Dafoe and Robert Eggers for The Lighthouse as a slight.

Well, if we can’t join them, let’s beat them at their own game.

Enter the 2020 Hereditaries (named after Toni Collette’s Hereditary omission from last year’s Oscars). The awards are a public vote that will recognize the very best that horror had to offer in 2019. The nominations were originally compiled by Trace Thurman and I for the Horror Queers podcast, but when we saw the Academy Award nominations we figured that there would be plenty of folks itching to make their voice – and vote – count.

Here’s what you’re voting on:

Best Wide Release
Best Sequel/Remake/Reboot
Best VOD/Streaming
Best Horror TV
Best Director
Best Actor
Best Actress
Best Supporting Actor
Best Supporting Actress
Best Animal
Best Villain
Best Sequence; and
Best Death

Click here to vote. The deadline to enter is Wednesday, Jan 22 at 11:59pm EST. Winners will be announced on Horror Queers social media accounts (Facebook group and Twitter), as well as a special Patreon minisode that will come out on the day of the Oscar ceremony (Sunday, Feb 9).
